Hard Sell Tactics Won't Work on PDA Autism

Writer's picture: Jennifer MeaigJennifer Meaig

Having my own webpage has brought me new amusement these last few days, as a number of hungry, hustling, go-getters keep sending me messages and trying to use hard sell sales tactics on me to make me feel insecure and like I need their marketing services. I would suggest to them to pay better attention to their audience before clicking send on their sales pitch.

My particular autistic profile is the PDA profile. PDA standing for pathological demand avoidance, or as some prefer, persistent drive for autonomy. Regardless of what you call it, it is characterized by the incredible, driving need to resist any effort made to manipulate or wrest control out of the hands of the PDA autist. I will resist violently any attempt to try to direct me or sell me on something that is not my own idea. I am actively repulsed by manipulation, and I am disgusted by people who think me so slow witted that I won’t smell the stench of their bullshit from across the internet.

So when you tell me every reason why my marketing sucks, my hashtags are inefficient, and that without your help, no one will ever read my blog, I will merrily, but politely, refuse the offer of your services. You could even be one hundred percent sincere in what you say about the inadequacies of my marketing, and I will not care in the least. I will gladly cut off my nose to spite my face before I allow myself to be pushed into something that I did not seek out. Because I also think you do not actually know what you are talking about. I am not trying to reach a huge audience or monetize my blog. You are barking up the wrong tree.

You cannot reason with me once you have triggered my demand avoidance. The instant you opened your mouth, you had doomed yourself to failure. The fact that you are even trying this on someone whose blog explicitly states that they have the PDA profile 1) really illustrates how there needs to be more education with the general public about the different ways autism presents. If you had known what PDA is and how a PDA autist would respond to your hard sell tactics, I don’t think you would have used those tactics; and 2) that these people aren’t even reading my blog to know if the hashtags I chose are appropriate or not. They don’t know my target audience. They are shooting blindly in the dark, and hoping to somehow hit their target by sheer dumb luck.

Most autistic people have demand avoidance, and many of us feel very resistant to pressured sales techniques. PDA autists more so. So if you think your marketing skills will benefit me and my webpage, do yourself a favor and save us both time and walk away. Hopefully you will read this before you go, and it will improve your ability to successfully market yourself. Consider it free education that all the seminars and college classes will never tell you. Neurodivergent people have strong bullshit radars and aren’t falling for your sales pitch. The harder you push, the more we resist and trust you less. Save your effort for the neurotypicals that will be too polite to let you know that you are bothering them.
